Fall/Winter 2003 mirror grinding class

Final Costs

6" mirror kit - $51 (6 people are doing this)
8" mirror kit - $102 (2 people)
10" mirror kit - $140 (1 person, paid!)
8" kit (abrasives only) - $31 (1 person)

Overview of raw material costs

For 6" and 8" mirrors, we will be using two glass disks. One will
become the mirror and the other is called the "tool". For 6" mirrors,
the cost is $17.50 per blank, for a total of $35 plus shipping. For 8"
mirrors, the cost is $35 per blank, for a total of $70 plus shipping. A
10" blank costs $85.50 plus shipping.

Next, we have to buy abrasives (for grinding) and pitch and cerium oxide
(for polishing). I won't know exactly until I place the order, but for
a 6" mirror the total cost of these should be around $15. For an 8" it
should be around $20. For a 10", is will be about $25 or so.

For a 6" mirror, glass and abrasives ought to be around $50-$55.
For an 8" mirror, figure about $90-$95.
For a 10" mirror, figure $120-$130.
