The Solar System -- In this introductory course we will study our solar system: the Sun, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. One aspect of this study will be the phenomena we can experience in our everyday lives, including the appearance of the sky, the cycles of days, months, seasons, and years, and the physical laws governing these phenomena. In the remainder of the course we will focus on the physical nature of the various objects in our solar system and come to understand how they and the solar system itself came into existence. We will be paying special attention to recent exploration of the solar system such as the Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Mars Global Surveyor, the Cassini mission to Saturn, the Phoenix Mars Lander and the MESSENGER mission to Mercury.

Textbook -- Universe: the Solar System (3rd edition), by Freedman and Kauffmann.

Prerequisite: none

General Education: This course qualifies as a course in Physical Sciences (Natural Sciences and Technology) and also qualifies for Quantitative Reasoning II.

Credit not given to students with credit in ASTR 100, ASTR 210, GEOL 116, or PHYS 212.
