Admission
- Deadline: January 15
- Status Requirement: bachelor's degree in physical science or engineering
- Minimum Grade-Point Average: 3.0 (A = 4.0)
- Required Tests: to be considered
for admission, all applicants must take:
- Graduate Record Examination General Test
- Graduate Record Examination Subject Test
in Physics
- In addition, International students must take:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Students scoring
- below 550 are unlikely to be admitted.
- Admission decision: based on a
balanced assessment of the grade-point
average, the GRE scores and three letters of
recommendation.
Financial Aid Students admitted to the
graduate program usually receive financial assistance.
University fellowships, teaching assistantships, and
research assistantships are available. Most students
in the astronomy program support themselves with
half-time teaching assistantships during the first one
or two years. Salaries started at $14,100 for the 9
month 2002-03 academic year, in addition to a tuition
waiver. Students also usually receive summer work
support ($3,133 in summer 2001). Advanced students
may compete for University fellowship or research
assistantships offered by faculty members whose
research is supported by federal grants. Recent
graduate students have also held National Science
Foundation Graduate Fellowships and NASA Graduate
Student Researcher Program fellowships.
